Quick-Lerncheck Englisch

Dear Telekolleg Students,
What a strange story I’ve just read! The employees in a home for animals in Oldham, in England thought that ‘Cent’ one of the dogs they had to look after was deaf because it didn’t react even to the simplest commands. Whether they shouted out ‘Sit’, ‘Fetch’ or ‘Come’, ‘Cent’ showed no reaction. However, when they looked at the records, they found out the reason: Before it had been sent to the home for animals, ‘Cent’ had been in a Polish family and had never heard a word of English before. So the employees gave ‘Cent’ some private coaching (Nachhilfe) in English and soon ‘Cent’ was able to understand their commands without any difficulty!
Well, dear students, I thought that today I would give you a little private coaching:
In my first letter of 2010 we looked at the composition. As you know, you have a choice between a letter and a composition and some of you might prefer to write the letter. So today let’s discuss how to write a letter in the final exam. Again, I would like to look at the problem through the eyes of a student who is not a brilliant writer of English!
Let’s take the subject that was given in the final exam some years ago:

Your American friend Jeff has written you a letter telling you that in America it is possible to get your driving license at the age of 16. Moreover it is possible to get special driving lessons for the test at school. Write him a letter telling him what you think of this.

Prompts:
-introductory remarks
-arguments and suggestions
-closing remarks

As I said in my letter in March, the prompts are a sort of ‘Gliederungshilfe’ – they help us to structure the letter.
To be honest, there’s not always a big difference between a letter and a composition – most of the subjects you get for the letter could be good subjects for the composition, as well. However in the letter we can, of course, be a little personal (especially in the introductory and closing remarks) and that appeals to (spricht …an) some students.
Well, as with the composition we need a few rough notes with ideas about the subject.
The following come to my mind:
It’s easier to learn to drive when you are young.
The driving lessons at school are probably cheaper than in a driving school (or free!).
There could be less time for other school subjects.
Are 16-year olds mature enough to drive?
Most accidents on the road are caused by young people.
Maybe an adult should also be in the car when the driver is only 16 or 17.

These arguments are not in any special order and there are, of course, lots of other arguments and ideas but I only need a few (We only have to write 150 to 180 words!). Well, let’s begin our letter. We cannot start off with our arguments-we have to add a few personal remarks.
As I said above, I’m going to try and write the letter as a student would write it whose best subject isn’t English! Here goes:

Dear Jeff,
I would like to wish you and your family a very happy New Year and thank you for your interesting letter.
I was really very surprised at what you wrote! Many people will perhaps think that drivers at sixteen do not understand all the dangers on the roads. However, in my opinion, that’s a good reason for starting to learn to drive at sixteen! Moreover, their mother or father can always sit next to them in the car, until they are competent drivers! Last week three teenagers were very badly hurt because they tried to drive faster than the car in front of them and did not see another vehicle on the other side of the road. Maybe if the driver had had driving lessons in the school at sixteen and not just a few months before his eighteenth birthday, he would have had more practice at driving and would have driven more carefully.
Well, Jeff, I look forward to finding out more on the subject when you visit us in summer!
Best wishes,
Agatha

Poor Agatha was so nervous in the exam that she forgot some of the words she wanted to use, but as you saw when we looked at the composition, there is no need to get into a panic- just take other words! Agatha has also solved her problem quite easily by taking other words. Instead of ‘erstaunt’ (amazed) she has used ‘very surprised’. She wanted to say that Sechzehnjährige möglicherweise nicht reif (mature) genug sind oder kein ausgeprägtes Verantwortungsgefühl (sense of responsibility) haben, um sich all der Gefahren des Verkehrs bewusst zu sein(aware of the hazards/dangers). However she has written that they ‘do not understand all the dangers’ – perfectly all right! Also, she couldn’t remember the word for ‘Eltern’ (parents), so she has just said: ‘mother or father’ She wanted to say ‘ernsthaft verletzt’ (seriously injured) but she couldn’t remember the two words in English. So she has written: ‘badly hurt’.
Instead of ‘badly hurt’ she could also say: ‘they had to go to hospital for six months’. She also couldn’t remember the word for ‘überholen’, so she has said: ‘they tried to drive faster than the car…” If you know words such as ‘lack’, ‘responsibility’ ‘mature’, etc. please use them - they will make your letter or composition interesting, but if you don’t know these expressions
use the words and expressions you know!
An excellent student could of course write:
