Neue Sendezeit in BR-alpha 
 
Ab dem 10. August erhalten die Telekolleg-Sendungen einen neuen Sendeplatz in BR-alpha. Sie werden künftig statt um 19 Uhr 45 bereits um 18 Uhr ausgestrahlt. Die Sendezeiten der Wiederholungen bleiben gleich.

Dear Telekolleg students,
I imagine that many of you are looking forward (5) to having your well-earned summer holidays. One of the big problems is, of course, getting to our destination (1). So many people are used to (1) jumping into their cars and then spending a large amount of time trapped (4) in traffic jams (1) on the motorway with a beautiful view of the vehicle (1) in front! This is strange, since (5) during their working lives many of them also spend immense (2) amounts of time commuting (1) from their suburbs (1) to their places of work. Why do they continue (2) to do this during their holidays, despite (2) the stress of the crowded motorways? Why aren’t they prepared (3) to travel by train? I suppose that many of them see this as part of the holiday and are not so disappointed (3) at their ordeal (5),although (5) they are, of course, relieved (5) when they finally arrive at their destination (1)
Still, as we know flying causes even more pollution (1). As concerned (3) environmentalists (1) have pointed out, one return flight from Munich to New York causes more pollution (1) per passenger than a whole year of driving a car.
So I feel a little guilty (schuldig) that I will be flying (1) to England to see my brother, sisters and other relatives, but as (5) I only fly to England once a year I suppose I needn’t feel too guilty! If I travelled more often by plane that would be (3) much worse, wouldn’t it? (2).
Well, dear Telekolleg students I really wish you and your families a relaxing summer. However, please don’t forget to look through the texts and exercises in the Arbeitsbögen and in the TK books. Did you understand all the words and constructions in the first three paragraphs of this letter? You’ll find most of them in some of the past Arbeitsbögen*
Have a quick look through them again.
If you are going outside of Germany (Austria or the German- speaking part of Switzerland) for your holiday, try to speak as much English as you can. Don’t worry if you make mistakes: Nobody is perfect (As my wife tells me!)
Once again, every best wish to you and your families for a relaxing – and warm – summer! Before I go, two short jokes to finish with. Maybe words like ‘guard’, ‘border’, ‘shoulders’,‘demanded’, ‘nip’ or ‘calm’** are new to you, but from the context or from the similarity to German (‘shoulders’) you should be able to guess their meanings:

A guard is standing at the border between America and Mexico. Suddenly he sees a man on a bike who is carrying two enormous bags on his shoulders.
“What have you got in those bags?” the guard asks the man.
“Only sand.” He replies.
“Well open them so that I can see,” the guard orders the man.
“The cyclist does as he is told, empties the bags, proving that they contained nothing but sand. He then put the sand back into the bags and then went over the border.
A week later the same thing happened again . The guard once again demanded to see what was inside the two bags and once again, the cyclist proved that the only thing in the two bags was sand. This continued every week for six months. The guard was convinced that the cyclist was smuggling something but he couldn’t find it. However, one day the cyclist with the bags of sand stopped coming. A few months later, the guard happened to meet (traf …zufällig) the cyclist in a small town near the border.
“We know you were smuggling something across the border,” he said to the cyclist. “I won’t say a word to anyone, but what was it?
“Bicycles,” the cyclist answered.

There was an accident at a busy crossroads in the centre of the town. Two cars crashed into each other. Luckily the two drivers were unhurt. They got out of their cars and one of the drivers took a small bottle of whisky out of his pocket. “Here,” he said to the other driver, “Take a little nip of this to calm your nerves.”
“Thank you,” said the other driver and took a long drink from the bottle. “Here, you have a drink, too,” he said, handing back the bottle to the other man.
“Thank you,” said the owner of the bottle, “but I would prefer not to drink any whisky – at least until the police have come and gone.”
