Start des 2. Trimesters

Weiterhin viel Erfolg!

Dear Telekolleg students,
Who are our heroes? Whom do we really admire? These are very interesting questions and the answers tell us a lot about ourselves and what our values (Werte) are - that is what we think is important in life. I found many of the answers of my students to these questions (in Arbeitsbogen 7-9) very moving (bewegend) and sometimes humorous. Below you’ll find some extracts (Auszüge) from some of them (published with the permission of my students!). I have used them as a basis for some exercises to show you some basic mistakes which I hope you’ll avoid makING (Gerund!) in the Feststellungsprüfung next week! Decide which of the expressions in brackets is correct. Don’t forget my advice in the first letter: Dose it. You don’t have to read all this letter or do the whole exercise in one day – you can do a bit each day for a week. If my explanations are too short, please look up the problems in that VERY USEFUL BOOK: ‘HELPING HANDS’ but you will see that I discussed a number of the problems in my last two letters.

A. I admire my grandpa. He was a modest man 1.(who/which) suffered war, crisis and hunger. He
gave all his love and time to his children and later to us grandchildren. He 2.(bought/has bought)
me and my siblings the ticket for the bus to the secondary modern school. Education was 3.(for
him important/important for him). I think, it’s time for the world to breed a new generation with a
healthy self-confidence, but not so 4.(much/many) egoism. Shall we always ask when we give
something: “What can I get for it?”. He 5.(gave/ has given) from his heart and he did that
6.(wonderful/wonderfully). I miss him – he had 7.(so/such) wonderful answers and taught me
respect for 8.(peoples/people). Thank you grandpa.

B. I admire my dad. He is a 9.(wonderful/wonderfully) man and is always 10.( there for me/for me there).11.(At/With) seventeen he lost his left leg in an accident. Because of this tragedy there 12. (is/was) no future in his old job so he went back to school and then trained for a technical job. He 13. (became/got) a job 14.(at/by/with) the city of Munich. In three years he 15.( retires / will retire/ is going to retire). I hope he 16.(has/will have) many years to enjoy his life with my mother, my sister and 17.(me/my/ mine).

C. I admire my best friend. I 18.(know/have known) him 19. (since/ for) thirteen years. In this time he 20. (has/has had) several really awful situations. But every time he has stood up again and has always been a bit stronger 21. (as/than) before. I don’t know anyone else in my circle friends with 22. (so/such) a strong personality.

And finally, here is an answer from someone who wants a good mark in the next Feststellungsprüfung! Believe me it was one of my students who wrote it!

D. The group of people I admire most is Telekolleg teachers. They are very intelligent and 23.(do/make) a good job. They always 24. (tell/tells) good jokes, too and all the students 25.(laughing/laugh) 26. (at/over) them. They are smart, always 27.(good/well) dressed and everyone 28.(has/have) a lot of respect for 29.(this/ these) wonderful people. I hope I will get good marks in the exam because of what I have written.

1.’ who ‘ (Remember? WHO for people WHICH for things or animals)
2. bought (Unfortunately this impressive man is not here any more, so we must use the ‘simple past’)
3. important for him (Note the difference to German: Die Bildung war FÜR IHN wichtig.)
4. much (We can’t count egoism! Too much egoism, too many egoistic people. See my last letter)
5. gave (see 2.)
6. wonderfully (The adjective describes a person, thing or animal; the adverb describes a verb(Here:
DID) He is a WONDERFUL man. He behaves (verhält sich) WONDERFULLY).
7. such (SUCH for nouns; SO for adjectives or adverbs: SUCH a nice MAN, SUCH an GENIUS, but
he is SO nice; He speaks SO slowly).
8. people (PEOPLE = Leute; PEOPLES = Völker/Völkerschaften)
9. wonderful (See 6.)
10.there for me (See 3.)
11. at (German: MIT 17!)
12. was (Please check all your verbs: If you are talking about the past, your verb should be in the
past!)
13. got (Do you remember my last letter on false friends?)
14. ‘with’ or ‘at’ (Careful! In German: BEI der Stadt München)
15. is going to retire / will retire (In German it is very common to use the simple present for the
future: In drei Jahren GEHT er in Pension. In English we use either a future, or often the
PRESENT CONTINUOUS: In three years he IS RETIRING.)
16. will have (See 15.)
17. me (Please be careful with these pronouns)
18. have known ( PRESENT PERFECT after: since/up to now/ yet /so far/ for (the last) three years,
etc. See also 2. )
19.for (SINCE with a point of time: yesterday, 3 o’clock, 2005, the fifth of January, etc. FOR with a
period of time: thirteen years, four minutes, an hour, a second, nine months, etc.)
20. has had (See 18.)
21. than ( He is AS strong AS I am. He is stronger THAN I am).
22. such (See 7.)
23. do ( to DO a job; to DO your work / homework!)
24. tells (As I wrote in January, forgetting the ‘s’ in plural nouns – books – or after the third person –
he, she, it swims – is the most popular mistake German learners of English make in English!)
25. laugh (Please check ALL your verbs in the exam and make sure you have not invented a new
form!)
26. at
27. well
28. has
29. these

Dear Telekolleg students, I know that you are very busy people, but may I ask you for the next week to think of a few sentences or short phrases each day to make sure you programme yourself not to make THESE mistakes.( eg: THIS town, THESE towns; THIS house, THESE houses THIS course,
THESE courses; Munich is bigger THAN my village but my village is AS big AS Reit.
